The Friday-to-Friday has become an increasingly popular parenting arrangement among divorced parents who share equal custody of their children. The popularity is due to the fact that the schedule allows you to settle into the weekend, with something to look forward to, rather than thrusting you into the busy weekday as the traditional Sunday-to-Sunday schedule does.
One advantage of this arrangement is that Friday naturally aligning with the ending of the school is extremely effective, due to the cohesive transition between households. This also allows the children to complete an entire school week in one home environment. Therefore, switching on Friday allows the parents and children to experience less stress, as they aren’t faced with a challenging work or school day. Rather, they can decompress and focus on a weekend of fun, engaging, and connecting with one another before starting the week.
Children require a secure attachment in order to feel safe and confident. Reliable trade off schedules that don’t interrupt their school days are helpful in accomplishing this. Frequent or drastic changes in schedule and time with each parent, although the norm is harmful, and oftentimes can create stress and insecurity for children. Research has shown that initiating healthy co-parenting efforts can mitigate some of the harm from earlier parental conflict.
Children deserve to feel safe, loved, and protected. They will already be dealing with many emotions due to the complex series of changes that divorce brings. Make your lives and theirs easier by co-parenting using the Friday-to-Friday schedule.
Overall, many parents and children have found that switching to the Friday-to-Friday schedule has brought joy, and lessened the stress of co-parenting. The Friday-to-Friday schedule leaves both parents happy, each looking forward to fun weekend activities. Allowing parents to see their children for a good amount of time, while also not creating a gap that is too long that leaves other parent disconnected. Although there is no single schedule that works for every family, at ANR Law, we often recommend the Friday-to-Friday schedule as a practical option for creating a more positive co-parenting experience, when feasible!
